KRG DPM discusses environmental threats with diplomats, consuls, calls for support

“Kurdistan, Iraq, and the world have been affected by climate change and environmental degradation for many years, yet unfortunately, this issue has not become a priority for governments and policymakers,” Deputy Premier Qubad Talabani said.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Deputy Prime Minister on Monday said he had chaired a meeting with representatives and consul generals of foreign countries, discussing the environmental threats facing Kurdistan including water resources and treatment strategies.

“Kurdistan, Iraq, and the world have been affected by climate change and environmental degradation for many years, yet unfortunately, this issue has not become a priority for governments and policymakers,” Deputy Premier Qubad Talabani said in a post on his Facebook page.

“We are still in the early stages, but we are serious and will continue to consult experts in this field to take appropriate measures and formulate a strategic plan to combat environmental threats through comprehensive cooperation,” he said.

“In this context, I chaired a meeting with representatives and consul generals of foreign countries in the Kurdistan Region, discussing the threats facing our region including water resources and treatment strategies,” he added.

“We also discussed ideas and projects to work with the government, civil society organizations, and the international community to protect the environment in Kurdistan and in Iraq more generally.”

“We asked the representatives of foreign missions here in Kurdistan to send their consultants and experts, especially in the fields of soil and water treatment plants, to help us to formulate and implement a strategic plan,” the Deputy Premier continued.

In the meantime, “We also called on foreign consulates and missions to work more closely with environmental and sustainability NGOs, civil society organizations, and academics working in these fields.”
