KRG says it works ‘day and night’ to complete third largest dam

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said on Sunday that construction is underway day and night to complete the third largest dam.

Located some 30 kilometers northeast of Erbil province, Kurdistan Region, the Gomaspan dam which is currently under construction will be the third largest dam. It has the capacity to store 115,000 cubic meters of water.

“Working is in progress day and night at the Gomaspan dam,” the KRG tweeted.

The primary purpose of the dam is water supply for irrigation but it will support a small 2.4 MW hydroelectric power station.

The dam is also expected to irrigate 4,000 hectares. Construction on the 85 m (279 ft) tall roller-compacted concrete dam began in 2013 and it is expected to be complete in 2023.
