In March, April, May, Asayish arrests ten over drug offenses – statement

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Sulaimani directorate of the security forces (Asayish) announced that during the last three months, it had arrested ten suspects over drug using and dealing charges, according to a statement on Saturday.

“The Asayish forces successfully arrested ten suspects during last March, April, and May by the order of the determined judge,” it said in a statement.

“Three of them were drug dealers, while the rest was drug user,” the statement said.

“The most used drug substances that the suspects used were opium and methamphetamine,” the statement added.

It further elaborated that the suspects are residents of different areas in the Kurdistan Region, including Iraq. Among the suspects, one of them is a female, according to the statement.

Asayish further underlined that the investigations are still in progress, while the suspects have been charged per Articles 26 and 30 of the drug offenses.

During the past few years, the security forces have ramped up efforts across the Kurdistan Region to contain the drug business and the spread of illicit drugs.

The spike in narcotic business in the area has caused risk in the Region as its shares swathes of borders with Iran, unstable areas in Iraq, as well as, the war-torn Syria, where drug trafficking and business have seriously heightened.
