PUK President says Peshmerga should be in service of the national interests

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Talabani on Thursday in Erbil received a UK military delegation led by Air Marshall Sammy Sampson, the UK Defence Senior Advisor to the Middle East and North Africa.

In a meeting, the two sides discussed the steps of the unification of the Peshmerga forces and stressed expanding coordination and support of the Global Coalition to the Peshmerga to form a national solid force, according to a readout of the meeting released by Talabani’s office.

In the meantime, Talabani praised the continued efforts of the Coalition forces and emphasized the PUK’s commitment to unify the Peshmerga forces.

“The PUK is committed to all understandings and agreements that have been signed during the previous period to unify the Peshmerga forces,” Talabani said.

“We do not want these understandings to be misled systemically or be a victim of party interests,” he said. “The PUK won’t make compromises on the Peshmerga rights,” he stressed.

“Meanwhile, Peshmerga should be in the service of the national interests, and safeguard our land and flag,” he added.
