SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi President Latif Rashid on Tuesday met with Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto along with his accompanying delegation in the capital of Baghdad, according to a press release.

In a meeting attended by the Italian Ambassador to Iraq Maurizio Greganti, the two sides discussed Iraq-Italy friendship relations, and how best to promote security cooperation, a press release said.

“President Rashid affirmed the depth of the Iraqi-Italian ties while highlighting that Iraq is seeking to develop further cooperation and make use of technological expertise in the files of water and environment, including expanding partnership frameworks in the fields of training, building security forces and coordination efforts in the fight against terrorism and extremism.”

The President also “asserted that the government has an intensive program that gives priority to promoting security and stability which is considered a fundamental pillar to implementing the governmental program, improving public services, developing infrastructure and encouraging investment as well,” it added.

“Iraq has suffered from wars, terrorism, and violence but its situation now is being marked by security and stability,” Rashid said, according to the press release.

“Additionally, he hoped that a cooperation council for trade and economy between Iraq and Italy will be formed.”

In the meantime, the Italian Defense Minister affirmed that “Italy will continue to be a strong partner in supporting Iraq.”

He further underlined his country’s eagerness to further develop relations with Iraq in various top issues, “which first and foremost are security, intelligence, environment, water and industry fields, in the way that would most benefit both nations’ ties.”
