SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Republic of Iraq evacuated eight more of its citizens from Sudan to Saudi Arabia, the Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday.

“Eight Iraqi citizens were evacuated from Sudan to Jeddah, in coordination with the Saudi authorities,” a statement released by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry read.

Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands wounded in Sudan since April 15 when a long-simmering power struggle between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into conflict.

Until the fighting broke out, Sudan had been engaged in an internationally-backed transition toward democratic elections.

The fighting has pitched Sudan towards a civil war, derailing an internationally-backed transition aimed at establishing a democratic government and sending tens of thousands of people fleeing into neighbouring countries.
