SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has formed a new partisan military faction in the Bradost area of the Kurdistan Region.

An informed source familiar with the situation told Esta Media Network that the newly-formed military faction “has been formed by the order of KDP leader Masoud Barzani.”

It also added that “Barzani’s youngest son Mustafa Barzani who is known as Babo is supervising the military faction.”

“Colonel Shawaf Jamal Ali Beg Bradosti is the commander and his Deputy is Safi Faruq Haji Beg Bradosti,” It said.

The Bradost region is located in the northeast of Erbil province, its bordering area is known for the frequent clashes between Turkey and the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) militants, an Ankara opposition.

The PKK maintains its bases in the area, where Turkey had carried out several cross-border operations against the PKK deep into the Kurdistan Region territory.

The KDP wants to combat the PKK militants through its newly-formed military faction, according to the source.

“Further, the military faction is apparently a hostile reaction towards the tribal leader of the Bradosti tribe, Karim Khan Bradosti, who is a member of the rival Patriot Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leadership council.”
