SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The sleeper cells of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) on Saturday killed a Kurdish civilian in the Gwer area south of Erbil province.
Earlier this morning the body of the victim was retrieved near the Gwer River in the area. He had been shot and killed.
The ISIS sleeper cells abducted two civilians in the area who were on a trip for fishing in the vicinity of the Gwer River last Friday one of whom was declared killed today.
The fate of the other abductee has remained unclear.
ISIS was declared territorially defeated in Iraq back in 2017 following massive blows by the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, Iraqi security forces, and Iran-backed militias with the support of the Global anti-ISIS Coalition.
However, some of the ISIS members are still roaming in the region, and it now uses sleeper cells to wage hit-and-run attacks and abduct the locals in the areas that are disputed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Iraq.
