Authorities, NGOs plant thousands of trees in Sulaimani on Kurdistan Environment Day

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Thousands of trees were planted across Sulaimani province on Sunday as the Kurdistan Region marked its annual Environment Day.

April 16 marks Kurdistan Environment Day every year during which civil campaigns are held to raise people’s awareness of issues related to the environment and the government launches various events

Under the direction of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Talabani, thousands of trees were planted across Sulaimani amid a campaign supervised by the local authorities during Kurdish Environment Day.

The campaign aimed at further greening Kurdistan. It initially began in Piramanagron sub-district, where dozens of local environmental organizations have made contributions as well.

The second stage of the campaign covered areas in Bazian and was successfully completed with the participation of local officeholders.

The campaign was further concentrated in Bazian due to the high ratio of air pollution in the area, according to Sulaimani Forest Director Hawkar Jalal.

The PUK President has tasked the campaign to pay more attention to Bazain to provide a better environment for its residents.

In December last year, the PUK President launched a national initiative to plant one million trees across the Kurdistan Region. The initiative reached plenty of significant places in the Region and it still continues.

“The PUK president’s initiative is counted as part of global efforts to expand the green space because the world agrees that a healthy environment brings human health,” Jalal added.

Jalal also stressed that the campaigns to green Kurdistan will be continued. “Greening Kurdistan is a national concern.”
