Kurdistan President says he had met with Pope Francis

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region President Nechrivan Barzani on Thursday met with Pope Frances in the city of Vatican, according to a tweet.

Barzani in a tweet said, “I’m honored to meet Pope Francis today & delighted to see His Holiness in good health.” “Pontifex stressed the importance of preserving peace & fraternity among Iraq’s communities. I reiterated my commitment to continue promoting peace & coexistence in Kurdistan, Iraq & beyond,” He added.

Barzani on an official visit arrived in Italy’s Rome on Wednesday, where he is also expected to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and officials there, according to the Region’s Presidency office announcement.

The announcement earlier stated that Barzani’s meeting with the Pope and PM Meloni would focus on developing relations, expanding areas of cooperation, and other issues of common concern.

In March 2021, the Pope made a historical visit to Iraq and paid visits to Baghdad, Najaf, the ancient city of Ur, Erbil, Mosul, and Qaraqosh during his trip to the country.
