Pentagon is investigating Sulaimani drone attack: spox

State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel briefed reporters and responds to questions on a range of issues, Apr. 10, 2023.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A spokesperson for the United States Department of State stated that the Pentagon investigation is underway regarding the drone attack on Sulaimani International Airport last Friday.

A drone attack targeted a convoy for which Department State Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel confirmed it included the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-chief, Mazloum Abdi, along with three US personnel at Sulaimani airport.

“Our Department of Defense is investigating the attack on the convoy on April 7th. That convoy included U.S. military personnel,” Patel told reporters during a press briefing on Monday.

“We can confirm that there were no casualties, and we of course forcefully oppose any action that threatens the safety and security of U.S. personnel,” he added.

“U.S. forces remain in Iraq and Syria in support of local partners to achieve the enduring defeat of ISIS. The degradation of ISIS in the region continues to be an important priority of ours.”
