SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi said on Wednesday the parliament supports the finding of a ‘comprehensive solution’ to issues between Erbil and Baghdad.

A delegation from the Kurdistan Region led by Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani met with Halbousi, deputy speakers Bashir Hadad and Hassan Kaabi and several committees at the Iraqi parliament on Wednesday.

“The Kurdistan Regional Government remains committed to finding a peaceful solution to disagreements, including the implementation of the Federal Fiscal Deficit Bill, and is prepared to fulfill its duties and obligations in accordance with the law,” Talabani said during the meeting, according to the KRG.

He also called on the Iraqi parliament to assist with the implementation of the fiscal deficit financing law and preserve the constitutional rights and financial entitlements of the Region.

The law, adopted by the Iraqi parliament last month, without Kurds’ consent, commits the Kurdistan Region to hand over non-oil revenues and an amount of oil that SOMO indicates to the federal government in exchange for an amount of money as payment for the Region’s public servants.

“The Iraqi parliament supports the finding of an essential solution to the issues between Erbil and Baghdad, which commits both the Regional government and the federal government to the laws,” the Iraqi parliament speaker said.

The KRG delegation, visited Baghdad on December 9, has held a series of meetings with senior Iraqi officials to reach an agreement over oil and revenues.

On Saturday, the delegation and Iraqi parliament’s financial committee held a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and Halbousi.

Lawmaker Hoshyar Abdulla said the meeting was “positive”.

Kadhimi’s office said the Iraqi and Kurdish officials discussed mechanisms for the implementation of the fiscal deficit financing law, also known as the loan law.
