SULAIMANI (ESTA) — President Latif Rashid on Friday said that terrorism has ended in Iraq, calling for international and regional support for the country’s development “project”.

“There is coordination, cooperation, and a common approach between the political forces with a positive atmosphere,” President Rashid said adding “the international community is concerned about Iraq’s stability due to its economic role and great investment opportunities.”

“Terrorism has ended, and we need regional and international support for Iraq’s political, security, and development project,” he added amid a televised program.

Speaking on Kurdistan-Baghdad relations Rashid said the current connection between the two sides is “good”.

In the meantime, the President stressed on the Kurdistan Region political situation that there is a “seriousness” between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the rival Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to address the disagreements.

“we may conduct visits to support the [PUK-KDP] dialogues.”

During recent months, PUK-KDP relations have been at odds, witnessing a conflictual situation over several matters including “inequality” in revenue distribution by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), electoral law amendment as well a “systematic blockade” of Sulaimani by the KRG.

In late January, after months of the disputes’ escalation between the two rival Kurdish parties, officials from the PUK and the KDP held a meeting in Sulaimani to discuss the disagreements.

A joint statement following the meeting revealed that both sides agreed to continue the talks regarding the disagreements.

The PUK spokesperson had earlier said prior to January’s meeting that “We want to address the issues with the KDP through dialogue.”
