SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Minister of Interior Othman al-Ghanmi said on Sunday that the federal government would deploy “more troops” to Sinjar district.

Ghanmi leading a security delegation arrived in Sinjar city earlier on Sunday to oversee security situation in the district.

The delegation held an “important and detailed” meeting with police officers and security officials as well as tribal leaders in the district, said spokesman of Iraqi joint operations command Tahsin al-Khafaji.

“The deployment of more troops will be in accordance with Baghdad-Erbil agreement, and is aimed at helping displaced people return to Sinjar,” Ghanmi said in a press conference.

The interior ministry also ordered opening of directorates of traffic police, emergency and combating crimes in an effort to impose security in Sinjar.

In October, the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) reached an agreement to normalize the governance and security situation in Sinjar.

Khafaji said on Dec. 3 that all armed groups had left the district and that the federal government had made “great efforts” in consultation with Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)-affiliated groups in preparing the grounds for the implementation of the agreement.
