Sulaimani governor promises to fix electricity issue of Penjwen following civil pressure

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Sulaimani governor on Sunday promised to fix the electricity issue of Penjwen district following five days of the civil campaign.

Residents of Penjwen in the east of Sulaimani province had taken streets against the government’s failure to deliver electricity to the area.

The situation resulted in the eruption of a wide civil campaign across the district since last week’s Wednesday.

The people announced a general strike, closing shops and markets, and setting up a sit-in in the district town center.

They called on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to deliver electricity and further demands such as service as well as kerosene amid the cold weather of the area.

On the third day of the general strike, the mayor of Penjwen resigned on Friday.

“Unfortunately, for many years our authorities above us have failed to take a serious look at Penjwen district and provide the necessary budget and services, despite the fact that we have repeatedly conveyed the demands of Penjwen to them,” the mayor said.

The mayor also apologized to the public because of the situation.

Sulaimani governor Haval AbuBakri promised Penjwen to resolve the electricity issue of the district as soon as possible.

Penjwen which lies in the eastern of Sulaimani province is known for its strategic location, which closely bordering with Iran and has Bashmakh international border Iraq-Iran border crossing.

It’s the coldest area during the winter where temperatures stand degrees below zero Celsius.
