Landmines claimed lives of seven people last year: agency

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Landmines claimed the lives of seven people in the Kurdistan Region in 2022, the Kurdish Mine Action Agency on Wednesday said.

The Kurdistan Region’s Mine Action said, “During the year, 211,000 square meters have been cleared out from landmines in the border of Erbil province,” it said in a press conference, revealing its annual report.

In the meantime, “198,000 square meters have also been cleared out in the border of Sulaimani province,” it added.

Speaking about Duhok province it added that 211,000 square meters were cleared out amid the clearing operations, while in Garmian administration was 104,000 square meters.

At least seven people had lost their lives due to landmines explosives and 24 others wounded with the vast majority from were from Sulaimani province, according to the press conference.

The remnants date back more than three decades to the Iran-Iraq war between 1980 and 1988.

There are more than 3,300 minefields in the Kurdistan Region, according to the Kurdish mine action agency.
