Penjwen residents take streets against electricity shortage

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Residents of Penjwen district in the east of Sulaimani province on Wednesday protested over electricity shortage, said Esta reporter.

The government has decided to reduce the hours of national grid power as the district’s demands continue to spike for electricity during the winter. The situation resulted in an electricity shortage, according to the protesters’ words.

The protesters also called for the national distribution of kerosene which is a common method of warming in the Kurdistan Region.

The residents of the district said that they are yet to receive kerosene from the government while the cold season has already approached.

Moreover, the protesters have blocked the entrance gate of the district, paralyzing traffic in the area in pressure to fulfill their demands, according to the reporter.

Penjwen which lies in the eastern of Sulaimani province is known for its strategic location, which closely bordering with Iran and has Bashmakh international border Iraq-Iran border crossing.

It’s the coldest area during the winter where temperatures stand degrees below zero Celsius.
