Iraqi Prime Minister receives phone call from Brett McGurk

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Prime Minister of Iraq received a phone call from Brett McGurk, White House Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, said the state news agency on Saturday.

In the Phone call, the U.S. official and Prime Minster Mohammed Shia al Sudani highlighted the security situation in Iraq, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) said.

In the meantime, McGurk stressed the continuation of the United States’ support “for Iraq’s stability, security, and sovereignty in addition to President Biden’s desire to strengthen strategic bilateral relations,” the agency reported.

“Iraq is a unified, independent, and sovereign state, as the priority of the government is to maintain balanced relations and build economic partnerships across the region and the world,” the Prime Minister told the U.S. official, according to (INA).

Moreover, the two officials have laid emphasis on the importance of continuing efforts to ensure the “perpetual” defeat of the Islamic State (ISIS).

They also highlighted supporting Iraq’s regional role in building bridges between the countries of the region, said the agency, while adding that the Iraqi Prime Minister intends to send a delegation headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs to Washington.

The Iraqi delegation visit aims to promote the common interests of the two countries under the strategic framework agreement. This will include discussing energy investment in Iraq and combating the effects of climate change, the agency added.
