SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The survival of the Kurdistan Region’s achievements only depends on our unity, said Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.

Advisor to the President Dlshad Wahab read a statement on behalf of Barzani during the funeral ceremony of late top Kurdish Commander Akam Omar on Saturday in Sulaimani.

The statement expressed condolences to the Family of Commander Akam, sympathizing with their immense sorrow.

The Late Commander used to be the Commander of the Kurdistan Commando Forces, however, he died in Germany on Monday from wounds sustained in an IED blast amid an anti-ISIS operation in late October in Sulaimani’s Garmian Zenana area.

“This experienced Commander was martyred amid the national duty of protecting Kurdistan,” read the statement.

“Martyr Akam has always been always at the forefront lines of defending Kurdistan, he never allowed his fellow fighters to advance to the frontlines of fighting enemies before [Akam] himself,” the statement added.

The President in the statement has reiterated that the Kurdistan Region is before “serious threats and dangers”, according to the statement.

The President has also highlighted the necessity of unity between the Kurdistan Region’s two ruling parties, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

“More than ever we need unity, harmony, tolerance, and cooperation between all political forces in General, more specifically between the PUK and the KDP,” Barzani said, according to the statement.

“The survival of the Kurdistan Region’s achievements only depends on our unity,” he stressed.

Moreover, the President also demanded the political parties put aside the disputes, and resolve them through discussion.

“Let the working for the sake of a better future for Kurdistan people gather all of us.”
