SULAIMANI (ESTA) — President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani on Thursday offered congratulations to Yazidis on the occasion of Ezi Feast Day.
In a statement, Talabani extended his congratulations to Yazidis on their celebration of Ezi Feast Day.
Talabani said that “The Kurdistan Region authority must take practical steps to heal the wounds of the Yazidi genocide disaster, reconstruct Sinjar, and return the displaced people to their home”, according to the statement.
“The PUK will be the preserver of Yezidi’s rights and their demands,” Talabani stressed, and “It will coordinate for the sake of securing a calm decent life for them,” he added.
Islamic State (ISIS) militants overran the Yazidi faith’s heartland of Sinjar in northern Iraq in 2014, forcing young women into servitude as “wives” for its fighters and massacring men and older women.
The militants shot, beheaded, burned alive, or kidnapped more than 9,000 members of the minority religion, in what the United Nations has called a genocidal campaign against them. According to community leaders, more than 3,000 Yazidis remain unaccounted for.
As many as 360,000 Yazidis had been displaced due to ISIS attacks. Up to 150,000 of them had returned to their areas, according to estimates.
