SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A roadside explosion hit a patrol of the Iraqi army in Al-Tarmiya district, north of Baghdad on Wednesday, leaving three killed.
Iraqi media reported that the explosion left three members of the Iraqi army killed, including a commander, while also leaving five others wounded.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing, and officials have yet to comment.
However, the Islamic State (ISIS) overran large swathes of Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014, declaring a “caliphate”, before Baghdad declared victory in late 2017 after a grinding campaign.
But a low-level militant insurgency has persisted, particularly in rural areas north of Baghdad around the city of Kirkuk and in the eastern provinces of Diyala and Saladin.
