Non-contract teachers protest in different parts of Kurdistan Region

Dozens of teachers gather outside Kurdistan parliament in Erbil to protest against unemployment, October 26, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Non-contract teachers on Saturday boycotted classes in different parts of the Kurdistan Region, calling for employment and full contract.

Hundreds of non-contract teachers gathered outside the General Directorate of Education in Sulaimani, as the same scenes were seen in Said Sadiq and Raparin administration, boycotting classes until they receive full-contract, according to their words.

The teachers who have gone on strikes for a week across the Region demand the government give them full contract and benefits that their colleagues receive.

“I don’t think our request will be that difficult, because the income of this country is more than necessary,” a non-contract teacher who was protesting told Esta reporter in Sulaimani.

“In this situation, we are waiting for the government so that the fate of the school kids in the area will not be troubled,” she added.

“Student classes have been paralyzed,” said another protester as they are on strike, refusing to go to classes.

The non-contract teachers are paid based on the number of lessons they are given per day. The minimum amount per lesson given to teachers holding a bachelor’s degree is 4,000 Iraqi dinars ($2.7).

There are more than 20,000 non-contract teachers across the Kurdistan Region, suffering from the government’s failure to hire them with full contracts and receive their wages.
