Two protesters killed during demonstrations in Sulaimani province

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — At least two protesters were killed and five others were wounded during demonstrations against salary delays and lack of services in several places in Sulaimani province, according to officials and medical sources.

Hundreds of people took to the streets in Ranya, Said Sadiq, Halabja, Kalar, Garmian, Darbandikhan, Piramagroon, Chwarqurna and Chamchamal on Monday afternoon.

Two protesters were injured in Said Sadiq southwest of Sulaimani, according to mayor Dyar Rafiq. “Two protesters were shot during the demonstration,” he said.

Angry protesters set fire to headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Change Movement, Kurdistan Islamic Group and Kurdistan Islamic Union.

The demonstrators also torched mayor’s building and house in the town.

In Ranya, security forces opened fire on protesters who gathered in the district’s bazaar. No casualties were reported.

Protesters in Chamchamal blocked the main road between Sulaimani and the district on Monday afternoon. A protester was killed and two others were wounded as they headed towards party offices.

A 20-year-old protester was shot dead during demonstration in Kifri. Protesters set fire to offices of several parties in the town.

In Kalar, the directorate of health said a child was wounded during protests in the district.
