Senior member of PKK intelligence wing was killed in Sinjar: sources

A vehicle is burning after it was bombed by Turkey in Sinjar, December 7, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A senior member of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) intelligence wing was killed in Sinjar amid an operation by Turkey on Wednesday, state-owned Anadolu Agency said.

The Agency cited sources but requested anonymity conditions as saying that “Fatma Onur, code-named Kinda Maras, was targeted in an operation by Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) in the Sinjar region.”

“Active in both Iraq and Syria, she played a role in many terrorist acts against security forces, especially in the Sulaimani region and rural areas of Iraq,” Anadolu quoted sources as saying regarding the background of the targeted person.

The PKK has yet to confirm the Turkish intelligence operation.

The PKK managed to establish its stronghold in Sinjar in 2014 under the pretext of protecting the local Ezidi community from the Islamic State (ISIS) terror group.

Back then, The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) signed an agreement with the Federal government regarding the normalization of Sinjar’s situation and PKK withdrawal in that region.

The PKK launched an insurgency against the Turkish state in 1984 and more than 40,000 people have been killed in the ensuing conflict. The PKK is regarded as a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.
