SULAIMANI (ESTA) — According to Turkey’s Defense Ministry on Sunday, it destroyed 89 targets amid renewed airstrikes in Syria and the Kurdistan Region.
Dubbed an attack operation “Claw-Sword” Turkey unleashed a new offensive against the Kurdish groups in both territories in the early hours of Sunday, conducting airstrikes on bases of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).
The Ministry in a statement announced the result of the attack saying that 89 targets, including shelters and ammunition depots, were destroyed in air strikes on Kurdish militant bases.
The strikes had targeted Qandil, Asos, and Hakurk in the Kurdistan Region and Kobani, Tal Rifat, Cizire, and Derik in northern Syria also known as Rojava, according to the Ministry.
“So-called directors of the terrorist organization were among those neutralized,” it added. Turkey uses “neutralize” term for targets who have been killed or wounded.
The PKK launched an insurgency against the Turkish state in 1984 and more than 40,000 people have been killed in the ensuing conflict. The PKK is regarded as a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.
In the meantime, Ankara deems the Syrian Kurdish militant group the YPG as the Syrian offshoot of the PKK, threatening its national security from southern borders.
