Protests set fire to party offices in Piramagroon; police officer injured

Smoke rises as protesters set fire to offices of political parties in Piramagroon, northwest of Sulaimani, December 6, 2020.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Protests erupted in Piramagroon in northwest of Sulaimani on Sunday, torching headquarters of three political parties and wounding a police officer.

Director of Emergency Center in Sulaimani Saman Nadr told Esta Media Network that a police officer was wounded during the protests in Piramagroon.

“The 33-year-old officer was shot by the protesters,” he said. “He is in the emergency center in Sulaimani to receive treatment.”

Protesters set fire to the headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Change Movement in the town, according to information Esta Media Network has obtained.

Piramagroon’s demonstration came after thousands of people protested in Sulaimani city last week against salary delays in the Kurdistan Region.

On Thursday, dozens of people were detained and several more were wounded as the security forces fired tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets at the protesters.
