SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The city of Sulaimani marks the 238th anniversary of its founding on Monday and a number of activities are set to take place to celebrate the anniversary.
The city was founded by Kurdish prince Ibrahim Pasha Baban on Nov. 14, 1784, who named the city after his father, Sulaiman Pasha.
The ambitious Kurdish prince had spent years studying in the vibrant cities of Baghdad and Istanbul. He had brought with his dreams of building a Kurdish city just like the most sophisticated cities of the Persian and Ottoman empires he had left behind.
The city was established in the mountainous region described. It is surrounded by the Azmar, Goizha, and Qaiwan mountains to the northeast, Baranan to the south, and the Tasluja Hills to the west.
In 2019, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) listed Sulaimani as a creative city.
Local authorities in Sulaimani have prepared to launch serval activities to mark Sulaimani’s founding anniversary.
Esta Media Network has learned that the General Director of Education has instructed students to wear Kurdish clothes and hold special celebrations inside the schools.
In the meantime, Sulaimani General Directorate of Culture will have its own dedicated activities.
The celebrations of the Sulaimani anniversary this year will last for one week during which all-related authorities can hold various activities, according to Head of Sulaiamni provincial council Azad Hama Amin.
“On the 238th anniversary of the establishment of Sulaimani, I congratulate ourselves and the people of the city of sacrifice, the cultural capital of Kurdistan. I hope I always see Sulaimani brightly and successfully,” Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani tweeted.
