Iraqi President, Prime Minister meet on political situation

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Both the Iraqi President and the Prime Minister met on Saturday, during which they elaborated on overall Iraq’s political situation, the Premier’s office said.

During the evening hours, Iraqi president Latif Rashid and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani met in the Iraqi capital, a statement from the Premier’s office said.

The officials discussed overall Iraq’s political situation, stressing to conduct reforms, while highlighting the necessity of integrating the efforts, according to the statement.

Through out their meeting, the two sides have also elaborated on the economic as well as security situation of the country.

“Both the President and the Prime Minister have stressed the necessity to support the government’s efforts to implement its agenda, improving the service and economic sector and providing a glorious life for the people,” the statement said.

The statement did not further elaborate on the content of the meeting.

After more than a year of political deadlock since last year’s October elections, the Iraqi Council of Representatives on Thursday has given its confidence in a new government.

Prime Minister Mohammed Sudani,52, who previously served as Iraq’s human rights minister as well as minister of labor and social affairs, now heads the new government.

Sudani has vowed to reform the economy, fight corruption, and improve deteriorating public services, combat poverty, and unemployment among other things.

He also promised to amend the election law within three months and hold early parliamentary elections within a year.

The yearlong political paralysis has left Iraq without a budget for 2022, holding up spending on much-needed infrastructure projects and economic reform.
