Dozens of people were killed in explosion in Baghdad, authorities say

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — More than 20 people have been either killed or wounded after a fuel tank exploded in eastern Baghdad late on Saturday.

Iraqi security media cell said that a powerful blast that resulted by a fuel tank explosion has killed at least 9 people and wounded 12 others in the Iraqi capital.

The tank exploded near a capital football stadium while a game match was taking place.

The numbers were likely to be increased. The Iraqi authorities have initiated investigations into the horrific blast, and so far the cause remained unclear, according to the security media cell.

In the meantime, the Prime Minister of Iraq Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has ordered the formation of a special investigation committee to identify the possible cause of the blast immediately.

Prime Minister Sudani has tasked the Interior Minister to oversee the committee reach as possible as details for the cause of the blast.

“The public will be notified about the cause of the explosion after the investigations have concluded,” the security media cell said.

Moreover, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in a statement expressed its condolences to the families of the victims of the same incident.
