SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region’s Halabja University Thursday said there was a “misunderstanding” after pro-Islamic students have reportedly prevented a course regarding “Gender Equality” from taking place.

On Sunday this week, Halabja University Gender Equality Center intended to open a course under the name of “Women Leaders” for their students through which the matters relating to gender equality would have been discussed.

Facebook pages affiliated with the students have soon published some posts, proudly showing that pro-Islamic students have prevented the course from taking place, saying it was promoting “anti-Islamic” beliefs.

“The prevention by the students to not let the course taking place has proven that still, we have youths that brave for their religion and society,” a pro-Islamic female student has reportedly said, read a post on Halabja students’ affiliated Facebook page.

However, University officials on Thursday said that the aims of the course have been misunderstood.

“Unfortunately some kind of misunderstandings were generated, and our course was misinterpreted,” an official who spoke under the condition of anonymity told Esta.

“When we figured out there is a misunderstanding we decided to postpone the course,” the official added, without elaborating.

The official further said that their aim is only to serve the community, ensuring students’ parents that their children are in a “safe hand”.

“You don’t have to fear anything, your children are in a safe hand, I’m confident that there is no parent despising their daughter to be a leader, being a remarkable example for society.”
