President of PUK, UNAMI’s Chief discuss long-standing impasses

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani insists on his party’s call for the unity of Kurds on Iraq’s political scene, a statement said on Monday as he met Chief of UNAMI Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert in Baghdad.

The pair discussed the ongoing political situation of Iraq during which President Talabani stressed PUK’s call for unity and one united stance towards the developments.

Discussions were focused on the latest efforts to complete the constitutional entitlements, emphasizing the formation of a government that has the consent of all sides.

“The new government must be answerable for the desire of all nations and components,” a statement said from Talabani’s office said.

Talking on PUK’s insistence to resolve the issues, President Talabani reiterated his party’s willingness to find a solution on a constitutional as well as real partnership basis.

“The high national objectives must be the basis for our next working, we have complete faith in this principle,” Talabani added.

Apart from these talks, the pair also discussed the President of Iraq position and nominating a Kurdish candidate.

Explaining for Plasschaert, President Talabani said, “Since the very beginning not only for the President Position issue but also for all national issues we believed in the unity of Kurds in Baghdad.”

“And the President Position is in the frame of our effort to protect and achieve the rights of the Kurdish people,” Talabani continued.

“Hennis-Plasschaert and Talabani stressed the need for an inclusive dialogue to live up to the aspirations of the Iraqi people,” UNAMI separately said.
