Iraqi Prime Minister arrives in Erbil, meets senior Kurdish officials

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi arrived in Erbil on Monday and met senior Kurdish officials, including the President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

Prime Minister Kadhimi arrived in the Kurdistan Region Capital and met senior officials there along with KDP President Masoud Barzani, according to the Iraqi News Agency.

Kadhmi and Barzani during their meeting stressed the importance of adopting dialogue to pass the current political impasses.

The security challenges in overall Iraq with the joint coordination between Erbil and Baghdad, terrorism issue, and the attacks on Iraq’s territory were elaborated on in the same meeting, INA said.

Kadhimi’s visit to the Kurdistan Region is at a time when the country commemorates the fifth anniversary of the passing of former Iraqi President and former Secretary-General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Mam Jalal Talabani.

Late President Mam Jalal died aged 83 in Germany on October 3, 2017. The Prime Minister is secluded to meet the current President of the PUK to pay tribute to late Mam Jalal amid participating in a special ceremony, commemorating Mam Jalal’s death in Erbil.

The ceremony will be attended by senior local and foreign officials with diplomats, paying tributes to departed Kurdish leader Mam Jalal who sacrificed his entire life to achieve the cultural and national rights of the Kurds.
