Five Peshmerga die in deadly traffic collision in Sulaimani province

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Five Peshmerga died in a deadly traffic collision on Saturday on Zarrayan-Darabandi xan highway southeast of Sulaimani province.

Director of traffic in Darbandi xan Jasim Ali Khan told Esta Media Network that five Peshmerga died after their Toyota typed vehicle collided with a truck.

The identity of the victims has been confirmed and all of them were Peshmerga.

The incident took place at around 1100 local time, the truck driver was detained over the incident, according to Ali Khan’s words.

The director also raveled that the deadly incident was caused by a fault from the Toyota vehicle that attempted a wrong passing.

Traffic accidents are at the top of the citizen mortality rate in the Kurdistan Region, particularly in the outskirts areas or inter-city highways, most of the roads suffer from lack of maintenance and poor quality.

In 2021 throughout Iraq 4,863 people died due to traffic accidents, marking a %39.9 mortality rate, according to the Health Ministry.
