Death toll rises from building collapse in Baghdad as several are still trapped

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — At least two people died and several are still believed to be trapped under the rubble after a building collapsed in Baghdad on Saturday, rescue operations are ongoing.

A four-storey building collapsed in the western of the Iraqi capital in Karrada district the downtown.

Civil defense teams have been deployed to rescue the survivors, and so far 13 people have been rescued, according to the local officials.

A source at the civil defense service said there remained “a number of people trapped in the collapsed building”, “they are believed to be around 3-4 people.”

It was not immediately clear what brought down the building, no possible cause has been identified but search operations are still continuing.

The district where the incident occurred is known for its cafes, and restaurants, and is popular with expatriates and locals alike.

officials and MPs from the Iraqi parliament called for an immediate investigation of the incident, meanwhile, an Iraqi news outlet reported that engineers have warned ten years ago that the budling is in danger of collapse.
