SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Two died and 20 others were injured after a major fire broke out reported in a hotel in Iraqi holy Karbala province on Wednesday.
Early Wednesday the civil defense teams received a report of a fire that broke out in Karbala from a hotel located in the center of the city, said a firefighter.
At least two people have died and 20 others were reported to be injured with rescuing 42 trapped guests at the hotel, the rescue team of Karbala’s civil defense said.
“The dead includes an Iranian and an Iraqi citizen,” said a rescuer, adding, “Both of them were a woman.”
“The hotel did not comply with safety fire norms,” and “No alarming systems were installed, investigation still underway,” the rescue team said.
The tragic fire incident comes as thousands of Shiite pilgrims pay a visit to the holy city of Karbala and many of them are from Iran as Arbaeen Shiite occasion days are approaching, occupying local hotels and guest houses.
Arbaeen marks the end of a 40-day mourning period for the death of the Shiite leader and grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, Imam Hussein, in a battle fought in Karbala in 680 AD.
