SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Parliamentary speaker Mohammed al-Halbosi sought for agreement between Erbil and Baghdad, a statement released by the Speaker’s media office on Sunday said.
The Iraqi parliament announced the resumptions of its operations after being paralyzed for more than a month since July when angry protesters of influential Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr stormed the legislative building and staged a sit-in.
The statement released by the Parliamentary speaker’s office showed that the parliament status backed to normal, days after the sit-in ended up with a bloody armed clash between pro-Sadr protesters and Iran-backed groups.
Al-Halbosi stressed setting a date for a snap election in the country and also asked to organize the relations between the Federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and sought an agreement regarding the oil and gas issue.
He also suggested a deal that appeals to both sides to hold early elections by end of 2023.
Iraq has been through a rough week a few days earlier when Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr announced his step down from politics and his supporters in return marched toward Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone resulting in the worst intra-Shiite fighting on the streets when the rally turned into a violent clash.
