SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Shiite coordination framework will organize a counter-protest in Baghdad on Friday to accelerate the government formation as the Sadrist supports continue the sit-in inside the fortified Green Zone.

In a statement on Thursday, the Shiite coordination framework called for a counter-protest for accelerating the formation of service and national government, and confront the crises.

“We urge all Iraqis to take a part in state’s protection protest,” the statement said.

“The protest will take place on Friday at 5:00 p.m. near the walls of Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone,” it said.

It was July 30 when the supporters of influential Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr stormed Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone in which Iraq’s vital intuitions are located including the parliament building.

Since then, the protesters continue to hold a sit-in inside the zone and blocked the parliament to carry out any sessions following the order of Sadr. They demand holding another early election in the country as well as the dissolution of the current Iraqi parliament.

Meanwhile the Sadrist political opponent, the Shiite coordiantion framework insists to form the government out of Sadr’s social and political movement and urges to accelerate the process.

The political process in Iraq is quite paralyzed since October 2021 general elections. 10 months have passed the country has been unable to form a new government. That’s the longest period since the 2003 U.S. invasion that reset the political order.
