Security forces thwart suicide bombing amid Ashura ceremony in Diyala

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi security forces in Diyala governorate foiled a suicide bomber to blow up himself amid The Ashura day mourning inside a large crowd of people. 

During the Ahura day ceremony in Diyala in which a large crowd of Shiite Muslims takes the streets to mourn the anniversary of the Karbala battle, when the 3rd Shia Imam, Hussein ibn Ali, a grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was martyred.

Amid the ceremony a suicide bomber terrorist attempted to blow up himself, however, the Iraqi security forces foiled the plan before the terrorist triggered the bombing button, according to Iraqi media.

The forces shot the terrorist and thwarted the plan by killing the terrorist who intend to commit a suicide bombing inside the crowd, Iraqi media said.

Ashura is a Shiite festival observed on the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar to commemorate the death of the martyr Imam Hussein bin Ali at the Battle of Karbala in 680 ad, according to Islamic Shiite sources.
