SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region parties are set to meet on Wednesday, Aug.10 with President of the Region Nechirvan Barzani, a source told Esta Media Network.
In a statement on Monday, General Secretary of the Kurdistan communist party Kawa Mahmood told Esta that the parties top officials are set to convene with the Kurdistan Region president Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday.
“The parties are received the invitation letter from President Barzani to attend the meeting,” Mahmood said.
“The meeting aims to discuss the next parliamentary elections of the Kurdistan Region” adding, “The United Nations special envoy in Iraq Jeannine Hennis-plasschaert will take part in the meeting as well” according to Mahmood’s words.
Earlier this year, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani set October 1, 2022, as the date for parliamentary elections in the Region by signing a “decree”.
The decree reads that in accordance with the 2005 Law Nr. 1 of the Amended Law of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region Presidency, October 1, 2022, is set as the date for the Kurdistan Region’s 6th Parliamentary Elections
“Even though the Kurdistan Region presidency has intensified its efforts along with the United Nations special envoy, nevertheless, up to this point there is no comprehensive understanding among the Kurdish political parties in order to launch the Region’s parliamentary election at the scheduled time” deputy speaker of the Kurdistan Region parliament Hemin Hawrami told a press conference earlier in July.
The Kurdistan Region held parliamentary elections in September 2018. Parliamentary elections are held every four years in the Kurdistan Region. A minimum quota of 30% of seats in the 111-seat house is reserved for women and 11 seats for parties representing minorities.
