Iran blocks little Zab river from flowing into Kurdistan Region soil

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iran on Saturday blocked the little Zab river from flowing into the Kurdistan region territory, Iraqi media reported.

“Iran blocked little Zab river which is a significant water drinking source for many people in the region”, and “It created resulted in water outage as well as threats many lives,” Iraqi media said.

Little Zab is s a river that originates in Iran and joins the Tigris just south of Zab in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Iraq is mostly desert. Its inhabitable areas are fed by the Tigris from Turkey, the Euphrates from Turkey and Syria, and a network of rivers from Iran.

Its neighbors also suffer from droughts and rising temperatures, leading to regional water disputes. Therefore, the neighborhood countries have built many dams in recent years to secure more water, they constructed the dams on the water sources that flow into the Kurdistan Region soil as well as Iraq causing a massive decrease in the water surface.
