SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq and Saudi Arabia have signed a deal on providing electricity that connects southern Iraq electricity with Gulf, the Iraqi Prime Minster media office announced on Saturday.
Prime Minster’s media office in a statement said, the deal has been made between Iraq’s ministry of electricity and the energy minister of Saudi Arabia, and the head of the Gulf administration network has signed on.
“More sources will be provided to supply Iraq with more electricity, in particular, when there is a lot of demand on the governmental electricity during this season” the statement read.
It further continued, “Saudi Arabia will commit to providing the electricity for Iraq”, adding “Iraq will be a center for transferring energy between Asia as well as Europe, for that reason the deal has been made”.
Iraq suffers from a poor electricity sector and it faces shortages during the hot seasons, authorities have tried to tackle the issue which resulted in prolonging frustration among the citizens.
Last year Iraq’s minister of electricity resigned after a Twitter campaign had launched protesting the power shortage across Iraq.
