SULAIMANI (ESTA) — More than 110,000 tourists have visited Sulaimani throughout the Eid al-Adha holidays, in the meantime, no awful incidents were recorded, said the spokesman of Sulaimani tourist directory on Wednesday.
“Since two days before Eid al-Adha and in the course of four days of the Eid, 110,000 tourists have visited Sulaimani to spend the holidays,” spokesman Aram Shwani told Esta Media Network in a statement.
“The number of the tourists were much higher than the past year”, explaining “in 2021 was 85,000 tourists,” Shwani said.
Shwani also expected the numbers will rise in the next few days because the holiday yet is not over, according to his words.
Despite the presence of a massive amount of tourists inside Sulaimani, however, no awful incidents were reported, neither shooting nor killing, etc.
The tourism industry is reviving in the Kurdistan Region after two years of hardship due to coronavirus pandemic. In 2020, the Region’s revenue from tourism dropped by 75 percent due to measures taken against the virus outbreak.
Over the past two decades, the Kurdistan Region’s economy had been heavily reliant on the oil and gas sector, which has driven the Region’s development.
Kurdish authorities have been trying to diversify but the collapse of world oil prices had dealt a heavy blow.
On the other hand, The general directorate of Sulaimani health also released the numbers of people received by the hospitals during Eid separately on Wednesday.
it referred to the numbers of both deaths and births. “At least 8,666 people were received by the hospitals”, and “95 births along with 17 deaths recorded as well,”.
“120 surgeries have been carried out during Eid al-Adha” it added.
