CPT reveals investigation result over killing two children in Kurdistan Region, it blames ‘Turkey’

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Christian Peacemaker Teams-Iraqi Kurdistan (CPT) revealed on Tuesday the results of an investigation regarding the killing of two children and wounding of another in a shelling attack in Bamarni sub-district of Duhok province on May 26.

“On May 26, thousands of civilians have joined an annual festival of Bamarni sub-district”, and “late on that night, three children were distracted playing football near to the festival surrounding, without any precaution three bombs have shelled the children, they were fired only a few meters from the incident site” according to CPT words that released in a statement.

“The shelling caused killing 13-year-old Yosif Kovan along with 11-year-old Avan Hoshyar as well as severely wounded 8-year-old Sipan Farhad,” it said.

Previously, Erbil-based counter-terrorism had blamed the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) for the shelling and victimizing of three children, however, the CPT organization said, relying on concert evidence as well as geographical analysis of the area in which the incident took place, the attack is most likely to be carried out by the Turkish Army.

“We heard the sound of warplane as well as military drones flying over the area during the festival day and the place which the event was held only 800 meters away from the largest Turkish military base in Bamarne” victims’ family told CPT according to the statement.

CPT further stressed that the accuracy of the shelling in targeting the playground of the children as well as military drones flying above the event indicates that the festival was struck on purpose aimed to harm or cause human loss.

Turkey’s presence in the Kurdistan Region backs to a deep-rooted conflict with Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) which mainly maintains its bases in the Kurdistan Region. It always sparked conflict with the Local Authorities and officials in both Ankara and Baghdad
