SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Groundwater in the Kurdistan Region decreased by 500 meters, said Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Sunday.
In a statement, the Media and Information Department of the KRG said that “at least 300 water wells have been dried up due to low rainfalls and the drought which hit almost the entire Region”.
“The Kurdistan Region government decided to drill 138 more water wells to reduce the consequences of drought,” it said.
“Four irrigation projects are under the construction as well” it added.
Kurdistan Region is going through a drought for the second year in a row, meanwhile, it is the third year in Iraq.
The impacts of climate change have covered the entire country, seeing itself in low rainfalls, intense waves of dust storms, and a decrease in water levels on both surfaces as well as underground.
Moreover, Turkey and Iran are holding back water to fill reservoirs behind dams that both countries have built in the past years and thus preventing water flow into Iraq’s territory including Kurdistan Region.
