SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr demanded the Sadrist’s lawmakers submit their resignation papers to the speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported on Sunday.
The leader of the Sadrist movement Muqtada al-Sadr has ordered his party lawmakers to submit their resignation papers from the Iraqi Council of Representatives to the Parliament speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi, (INA) said.
Earlier on Thursday, the leader of the Sadrist movement urged his party lawmakers to write their resignation papers from the Iraqi Council of Representatives and also said “The country’s reform will only take place with a national majority government”.
Sadr emphasized on forming a ‘majoritarian’ government, he also called upon the ongoing political stalemate in the country as a ‘Man-Made’ situation created by the political parties.
The lawmakers of the Sadrist bloc signed their resignation papers in Najaf on Friday after the leader of the party had requested on Thursday as the preparation to dissolve the parliament.
Iraq has entered a political stalemate since March when the Iraqi parliament failed to elect a new president due to disputes between the political parties.
The Iraqi council of representatives already failed three times to elect a new president since the beginning of the year due to a lack of quorum in the parliament that resulted from the conflict and disagreement between the political parties.
According to the Iraqi political system, the first step is to elect a president so that they can designate a prime minister to form the government.
The country is going through the longest political impasses since the general elections in October 2021, eight-month after, the new Iraqi government is not formed yet due to disputes between the political parties.
Under a power-sharing system designed to avoid sectarian conflict, Iraq’s president is a Kurd, its prime minister a Shia, and its parliament speaker a Sunni.
