SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Dissolution of the Iraqi Council of Representatives is the only solution to escape the country from the ongoing political deadlock, said a member of the Council on Saturday.

Until this moment the political parties are making a lot of efforts to find the ultimate solution in favor of changing the status quo and launching the government formation, but so far no solution has been found to end the political stalemate, said MP Mohammed Sahiud from the state of law fraction in the Iraqi Parliament.

“This situation is triggering steps toward dissolution of the council of Representatives, holding an early election could be the only solution to the political crisis,” he said.

“Yet, no decision has been presented regarding the dissolution of the Council of Representatives, however, it might be the only way out for the current political deadlock” he added.

The MP’s words came as the Sadrist lawmakers signed their resignation papers in Najaf after Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and the leader of the party had requested on Thursday as preparation for the parliament dissolution and end of the political stalemate.

Earlier on Thursday, Sadr had directed his party lawmakers to resign from the Iraqi council of representatives by signing their resignation papers.

“The country’s reform will only take place with a national majority government,” he said.

Iraq has entered a political stalemate since March when the Iraqi parliament failed to elect a new president due to disputes between the political parties.

The Iraqi council of representatives already failed three times to elect a new president since the beginning of the year due to a lack of quorum in the parliament and the lack of consensus between the political parties.

According to the Iraqi political system, the first step is to elect a president so that they can designate a prime minister to form the government.
