SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Police have detained perpetrators who were involved in an attack on a restaurant owner in Sulaimani city on Sunday (November 22), police chief said.
A group of armed men, some of whom dressed in formal military uniforms, raided a restaurant in Aqari neighborhood in Sulaimani on Sunday and attacked its owner.
“Those who attacked the owner of the restaurant in Sulaimani were arrested,” General-Director of Police in Sulaimani Aso Taha told Esta Media Network.
Taha said Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani and Co-leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Lahur Sheikh Jangi had called for punishment for the perpetrators.
“They are in touch and have asked to bring them to justice and receive punishment,” Taha added.
Footage circulated on social media showing the group, who drove two vehicles with tinted windows, entering the restaurant and attacking the owner as some people were trying to protect him.
The restaurant owner, chef Kamaran, said in a press conference that he had been threatened by the armed men.
“They said they would come back to kill us,” Kamaran said, calling on the local authorities to take action against the group.
Kamaran further said he had rented a man’s place for over nine years and that he had finalized the issue legally and through court.
“They came and attacked me with an armed force today,” he added. “One of them had a blue jacket on and the other was the son of the man I rented [his place], and they started to punch me.”
He further his two brothers who were also there were slightly injured during the raid.
