SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A unit of the Iraqi counter-terrorism forces has been deployed to Makhmour district to fight against Islamic State (ISIS) militants, Esta Media Network has learned.

The deployment of the Iraqi counter-terrorism forces is to clear areas in southwest of Makhmour of ISIS militants, according to information Esta Media Network has obtained.

“The counter-terrorism forces will detain anybody who they suspect [of links to ISIS],” a source told Esta Media Network.

Islamic State controlled roughly a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017. Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces as well as Iran-backed Shia militias defeated the militant group in 2017, but its members still roam areas of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
