SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq’s Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has called for the dissolution of Iraqi Council of Representatives and repetition of general elections, a source close to him said on Tuesday.
Iraqi media cited the source as saying that Sadr had told several political parties that the parliament should be dissolved and another early election should be held.
Sadr “will not form any government with the Coordination Framework”, the source added.
The Coordination Framework includes the other Shia parties except for the Sadrist Movement, led by Sadr.
“The dissolution of the Council of Representatives is now an obvious matter of discussions,” the source was cited as saying.
On Sunday, several Iraqi officials filed a complaint against the three presidencies at the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court, calling for the dissolution of parliament.
Iraq has entered a political stalemate since March when the Iraqi parliament failed to elect a new president due to disputes between the political parties.
Under a power-sharing system designed to avoid sectarian conflict, Iraq’s president is a Kurd, its prime minister a Shia, and its parliament speaker a Sunni.
