SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Four fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were killed during clashes with Turkish troops in the Kurdistan Region on Monday, the group’s military wing said on Wednesday.
The People’s Defense Forces (HPG) said in a statement that its fighters carried out a “big activity” against the Turkish military in the villages of Chiadel and Garukhalat in the district of Bradost and Khwakurk, northeast of Erbil, on May 16.
The group added that 28 Turkish soldiers were killed and four of its fighters were “martyred” in the attack.
The Turkish military has yet to confirm the casualties.
Turkey has taken its decades-old conflict with the PKK deep into the Kurdistan Region, establishing military bases and deploying armed military drones against the fighters in their mountain strongholds.
Most of the operations have focused on territory up to 30 km (20 miles) from the border.
